“She nearly left us all today. I stopped her. I couldn’t believe what she was planning to do. Couldn’t believe it when I walked into the barn and saw her there. I want to write more, but I promised her I wouldn’t tell a soul. Truth is, I’m worried sick. What if I’m not around next time?”
I looked up at Clare, and she nodded. “Looks to me as if Ellen tried to kill herself, don’t you think?”
What I was thinking was that this passage would definitely explain the marks around my neck from a rope and my recollection that Annabel was present during a strangling episode.
“Maybe she did run away, and died as a result?” Clare suggested
“No,” I said.
“No?”
I shrugged and pursed my lips. “At the time we are assuming Ellen tried to kill herself, as described in that passage, she wasn’t yet with Annabel, not as a lover anyway.”
“And?”
“And…once they were together, Ellen wouldn’t have put Annabel through that. If Ellen loved her so much, she wouldn’t willingly break Annabel’s heart.”
There was no need to discuss with Clare whether Annabel and Ellen eventually became lovers. It was obvious we both knew that had eventually happened, especially since I had ‘dreamed’ about them together and Clare had read Annabel’s notebook.
Clare sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “I can’t think straight. It’s all too overwhelming.” Tired brown eyes looked at me. “I’m beat.”
I felt the energy seeping from me, too. It had been a long day.
Clare stood and held out a hand. “Shall we go to bed?”
Fuck. Bed. One bed. Me and her in one bed. Alone together. In a bed. At night. My expression must have given away my surprise. I would never have been any good at poker.
At first Clare looked baffled, then a lopsided, interested smile appeared. “What’s the matter? Scared you’ll get molested in the dark by things that go bump in the night?”
I hadn’t thought of that. But now that she had mentioned it… “Where are we, erm, I mean I, sleeping?”
Clare leaned back and looked at me, really looked at me. I felt as if I was being analysed by her eyes, the eyes half squinting in contemplation.
“You have two options,” she said, her voice silky.
“Two?” I was quite proud that my voice didn’t squeak.
“You can sleep down here on your own…” She paused and gauged my reaction. I tried to assume the non-existent poker face. “Or, you can share the bed upstairs. With me.”
Why had she added “with me?” It wasn’t as if I would be sharing it with Annab—
Even if I hadn’t thought of being downstairs, on my own, with ghosts of Christmases past, I believed the option of snuggling up with Clare, who was alive, was definitely my best option. “With you.” My only concern was that I would become fresh with her in the night. Get a little bit too “up close and personal” when all she was suggesting was that we sleep in the same bed.
A smile flickered across her lips.
